A Cover Letter
Given the prevalence of artificial intelligence in the job application process, both on the application and hiring sides, I have elected to stop writing personalized cover letters. Instead, I provide prospective employers with this "cover letter" which is 100% authentically written by me and aims to communicate both my background and personality in such a way that is broadly applicable to all positions that I apply for.
About five years ago, I had my first experience with programming while trying to design an estimating program for my small construction contracting company. This involved nothing more than a complicated Excel spreadsheet and some "If This Then That (IFTTT)" plugins that allowed me to convert digital measurements to prices. Despite the humbleness of the project, I enjoyed the process of digital problem solving immensely, and it inspired me to leave the construction industry to pursue a career where I could solve problems like that every day. I upgraded some high school classes during COVID and applied to the University of British Columbia (UBC), where I graduated with a double major in Computer Science and Economics.
During my time at UBC, I worked hard to excel academically, earning a scholarship, entrance into the Honours Economics program, and the opportunity to serve as a teaching assistant in the Computer Science department. I also completed an internship at Natural Resources Canada, where I was able to abstract out some code for an economic model commonly used in the department, making it easier to deploy for subsequent analyses. My educational and professional experiences these past few years have continued to develop my technical and communication skills, as well as strengthened my resolve to find long-term employment within the software development industry.
If you're reading this, it likely means that I have applied to a position at your company which is likely somewhere in the software development or financial services industries, or the intersection thereof. Wherever this letter finds you, know that I am confident in my ability to succeed at your firm. My winding and multi-disciplinary path has made me an excellent self-starter, and my experience in multiple fields has made me quick to adapt and able to fit in a variety of environments. Any technical skill I don't currently possess that is needed for your role I am capable of and motivated to learn.
Please reach out to contact me with the information presented on my resume. I am available to meet and answer any remaining questions.
